Recognize the Problem

Signs Your Opener Needs Attention

Remote or Wall Button Not Responding

If pressing the button does nothing — no light, no motor sound — the opener may have lost power or the logic board may be failing.

Door Reverses Before Closing

If the door starts to close then immediately opens again, the safety sensor alignment is usually the culprit — a quick, inexpensive fix.

Grinding, Clicking, or Straining Noises

Unusual sounds from the motor unit often mean worn gears, a stripped drive, or the opener straining against a mechanical issue like a broken spring.

Opens or Closes on Its Own

A door that moves without being triggered usually points to frequency interference, a stuck remote button, or a failing circuit board.

Motor Runs but Door Doesn't Move

You hear the motor running, but nothing happens. This often means the disconnect cord was pulled, or the drive gear or trolley is stripped.

Opener Is More Than 10–15 Years Old

Older openers lack modern safety features like auto-reverse and rolling code security. Upgrading is often more economical than repeated repairs.

Common Questions

Opener Repair FAQ

It depends on the age and the problem. If the opener is under 10 years old and the repair is relatively minor (sensors, circuit board, drive gear), repair usually makes sense. If it's older than 12–15 years or it's had multiple issues, a new unit is often more cost-effective and gives you modern features like rolling code security and smartphone access. We'll give you an honest recommendation when we diagnose it.

This is almost always a safety sensor issue. The photo-eye sensors near the floor of each side of the door need to be aligned and pointing directly at each other. Dirt, a bump from a car, or a hanging cobweb can throw them off. It can also be caused by the close-force limit set too low, telling the motor the door hit an obstruction when it didn't.

Chain drive is the most common and durable, but tends to be louder — fine if the garage isn't attached or under a bedroom. Belt drive uses a rubber belt and runs much quieter, making it ideal for attached garages. Screw drive has fewer moving parts and needs less maintenance but can be sensitive to temperature extremes. We can help you choose the right type for your setup.

Usually not. Start by replacing the batteries — dead batteries are the most common cause. If that doesn't fix it, try reprogramming the remote. If the wall button still works but the remote doesn't after fresh batteries and reprogramming, the remote itself may need replacing. We can reprogram or replace remotes for all major brands.

Yes. We install and set up smart openers including LiftMaster with built-in myQ and Genie's Aladdin Connect. These let you open, close, and monitor your garage from anywhere via your phone. Some models also integrate with Amazon Key for in-garage package delivery. Ask us about smart opener options when you call.
