Garage Door Spring
Repair & Replacement

A broken spring means your door isn't going anywhere — and it's not safe to force it. Nate's team replaces torsion and extension springs the same day, usually within a few hours of your call.

Same-day service available  •  Kansas City metro

Do not attempt to operate your door if you suspect a broken spring. Garage door springs are under extreme tension and can cause serious injury. Disconnect the opener and call a professional.

Know the Warning Signs

Signs Your Garage Door Spring Is Broken

Door Won't Open at All

The opener motor strains or the door feels impossibly heavy when lifted manually. Springs bear most of the door's weight — without them, it can't move.

Loud Bang from the Garage

A torsion spring snapping sounds like a firecracker going off. If you heard a loud pop, your spring has likely broken.

Visible Gap in the Spring

Look above the door when it's closed. A torsion spring with a visible gap or separation in its coils is broken and needs replacement.

Door Opens Only a Few Inches

Modern openers have auto-reverse protection that kicks in when the motor detects the extra strain of a broken spring, causing it to stop right away.

Door Feels Heavy or Off-Balance

If one side drops faster than the other or the door feels much heavier than usual, the springs may be worn or one has broken.

Cables Are Loose or Dangling

Extension spring systems use safety cables to contain the spring if it breaks. Loose, hanging cables often mean a spring has already let go.

Spring Repair FAQ

Most standard springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles — roughly 7 to 10 years with average use (2–4 open/close cycles per day). High-cycle springs (20,000–30,000 cycles) are available and last significantly longer. If your door is older than 8 years and you've never had the springs replaced, they're worth inspecting.

Yes — and almost every professional will recommend it. Since both springs were installed at the same time and have the same amount of wear, the second spring usually fails within weeks or months of the first. Replacing both during the same visit saves you a second service call and keeps labor costs down.

Technically possible, but we strongly advise against it. Torsion springs are wound under hundreds of pounds of force. An improperly wound or released spring can snap violently and cause serious or fatal injuries. This is one of the few garage door repairs where the safety case for hiring a professional is overwhelming.

Torsion springs sit horizontally above the door and store energy by twisting. They're the most common type in newer and heavier doors and generally last longer. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side of the door and stretch to store energy. Both work well, but torsion springs are considered safer and more durable. We work with both types.

Most days we can schedule a same-day or next-day appointment across the Kansas City metro. Call us at 816.289.9600 and we'll get you on the schedule as fast as possible.
